A Giugno,nell'ambito del viaggio di cui vi parlavo qui, siamo passati per
Lynchburg,Tennessee, per visitare la distilleria del celebre Jack Daniels, il whiskey americano più venduto al mondo (mediamente 11 milioni di casse all'anno solo del "classico").
In June, as part of the trip I mentioned here, we went to
Lynchburg, Tennessee, to visit the distillery of the famous Jack Daniels, the best selling american whiskey in the world (an average of 11 million cases per year just of "old n.7").
Passando per il vialetto d'ingresso si notano le sedie create con vecchie botti usate,la parte scura è dovuta al fatto che,prima di metterci dentro il Jack,le botti vengono fiammeggiate brevemente.

Passing through the driveway you'll notice the chairs created with old barrels , the dark part is due to the fact that, before putting the Jack into them, the barrels are briefly flamed.

Però purtroppo,tempo che aspettiamo il nostro turno,arriva un nubifragio che,oltre a rendere insicuri i tratti della visita all'aperto,fa saltare una linea elettrica,che verrà riparata in tempo record(come in Italia,certo!)ma sul momento ci fa temere di non riuscire a fare la visita.
But unfortunately, while we wait for our turn, there comes a rainstorm that, in addition to making outdoors visit traits unsafe, blasts a power line, which will be repaired in a blink of an eye (like in Italy, yessss!) but at the time makes us fear of not being able to make the visit.

Questo è il famoso filtro,composto da pezzettini di carbone,attraverso il quale il Jack viene filtrato,goccia a goccia,dopo la distillazione,per ammorbidirne il gusto.
This is the famous filter, composed of pieces of charcoal, through which the jack is filtered, drop by drop, after distillation, to mellow its taste.

La Silver select,disponibile solo nei duty free degli aeroporti,selezionata come la Single barrel da botti singole dal gusto particolarmente buono(o almeno così ce la vendono!)dai mastri assaggiatori.E' un duro lavoro,ma qualcuno deve farlo ;)
La Silver select è maturata nelle botti disposte più in alto negli edifici che le contengono,e matura maggiormente sìa nel gusto che nel colore.
The Silver select, available only in some airports at the duty-free, selected, as the Single barrel, by individual barrels, that taste particularly good, by master tasters.It's a hard work, but someone has to do it;)

Il Green label,un pò più leggero del n.7 classico,sempre dovuto alla posizione delle botti nell'edificio in fase di maturazione.Credo sìa una questione di temperatura.
The Green label, a little lighter than the old n.7, always due to the location of the barrels in the building during aging.I guess it's a matter of temperature.
Il Gentleman jack,dal gusto particolarmente morbido,essendo fatto passare per 2 volte attraverso il filtro di carbone.

La Sinatra select,un edizione speciale dedicata alla passione del celebre Frank per il famoso Jack.Questa matura in speciali barili con delle scanalature interne ,che permettono al whiskey di invecchiare interagendo con una superficie maggiore di legno tostato, il che conferisce un colore intenso ed un gusto deciso.
Se avete voglia di fare una pazzia,potete comprarla qui per la modica somma di 129 eurilli.
The Sinatra select, a special edition dedicated to the passion of the great Frank for the famous Jack.It matures in special barrels with internal grooves, which allow the whiskey to age while interacting with a larger area of toasted wood, which gives an intense color and a strong taste.
Il Winter Jack,un liquore da consumare caldo,consiste in un misto di Jack,sidro di Mela e spezie.Una volta riscaldato,sa di sidro,buccia d'arancia,cannella e chiodi di garofano.Serie limitatissima in quanto lo fanno solo in Ottobre ed è reperibile per poco tempo.
The Winter Jack, a liquor to be consumed hot, consists of a mixture of Jack, apple cider and spices.When heated, tastes of cider, orange peel, cinnamon and cloves .Limited series as they make it only in October and is available for a short time.
Tennessee Honey!Questo hanno cominciato a distribuirlo anche in Italia,da bere rigorosamente freddissimo,a me non fa impazzire perchè è piuttosto dolce,il mio Sire però lo apprezza miscelato in parti uguali col Baileys classico e ghiaccio.

Altro discorso il Tennessee Fire,Jack aromatizzato alla cannella, STREPITOSO, assaggiato solo una volta a Nashville e purtroppo introvabile in Europa.Io non l'ho preso fuori perchè non avevo voglia di mettere roba fragile in valigia,per paura si rompesse,pensavo di poterlo reperire in rete ma le mie ricerche si sono rivelate vane.Se sapete dove comprarlo,vi prego ditemelo ^^
Tennessee Fire, Jack flavored with cinnamon, AMAZING, I tasted it only once in Nashville, and is sadly unavailable in Europe.I have not taken a bottle because I did not want to pack anything fragile,(who wants a broken whiskey bottle in her luggage?) I thought I'd be able to find it online but i had no luck with that :/
Veniamo alla visita vera e propria:la prima cosa che ci hanno mostrato è stata questa specie di grande cappa sotto la quale bruciano le cataste di acero canadese(sugar maple)che serviranno per creare i pezzettini di carbone che compongono il filtro che vi ho fatto vedere sopra.
In un azienda di queste dimensioni,che produce tutto il Jack che voi possiate trovare in qualsiasi angolo remoto del mondo,mi sarei aspettata che il grado di bruciatura del legno fosse controllato elettronicamente,tramite sensori automatizzati che controllassero che ne so,il colore o la consistenza del prodotto,ed invece il tutto è affidato all'occhio esperto di persone che sanno valutare quando il legno è bruciato abbastanza ma non troppo per non farlo diventare inservibile cenere.Incredibile.
At the beginning of visit, the first thing they showed us was this kind of big hood under which they burn piles of Canadian maple (sugar maple) which will be used to create the pieces of coal that make up the filter that I have shown you above.
In a company of this size, which produces ALL the Jack that you can find in any remote corner of the world, I would have expected that the degree of burning wood was controlled electronically, through automated sensors that checked, for instance,the color or product consistency, and instead everything is entrusted to the expert eye of people who know how to assess when the wood is burned enough but not too much not to turn it in unusable ash.Incredible.
Il signor Jack Daniel,davanti alla sorgente dell'acqua che viene utilizzata per la produzione;contribuisce all'ottimo sapore del Jack il fatto che questa abbia un contenuto molto basso di ferro.

La cassaforte che di fatto costò la vita a JD:si trovava nel suo ufficio,lui era andato a lavorare molto presto e quella mattina non si ricordava la combinazione,si arrabbio,tirò un calcio alla cassaforte e venne ucciso da una cancrena al piede seguente la frattura dello stesso.
Morale della favola:andare a lavorare presto fa malissimo XD
All'interno dei capannoni dove si svolgevano le varie fasi di produzione,ci hanno vietato di fare fotografie perchè,ci hanno detto,i flash potrebbero innescare reazioni pericolose con i vapori alcolici che si sviluppano dalle fasi di fermentazione,filtraggio etc etc.
Qualcuno però non è stato così scrupoloso,quindi come ho fatto sopra,aggiungerò qualche foto degli interni fatte da altri ;)
The safe that killed JD: he was in his office, he had gone to work early that morning and did not remember the combination, he got angry, kicked the safe and was killed by a gangrenous foot following its fracture.
Moral of the story: going to work early is very bad XD
Inside the sheds where they carried out the various stages of production, we were forbidden to take photographs because, they said, the flashes could trigger dangerous reactions with alcohol vapors which are developed by the phases of fermentation, filtering etc etc.
Someone, however, was not so scrupulous, so as I did above, I will add some pictures of the interior made by others;)

Se volete dare "una festicciola",sappiate che potete comprare una botte intera di Single barrel(pari a 240 bottiglie)per la modica somma di 10.000 dollari,e avere compresa nel prezzo la targhetta su una specie di "hall of fame" dei precedenti acquirenti,vicino a varie celebrità fra cui Kevin Spacey,ad esempio.
If you want to throw "a small party", know that you can buy a whole barrel of Single barrel (contains the whiskey of 240 bottles) for the modest sum of $ 10,000, and have included the metal tag on a kind of "hall of fame" of previous buyers, close to various celebrities including Kevin Spacey, for example.
Ho trovato la visita davvero molto bella ed interessante,lunga(un ora e un quarto circa),molto ben spiegata,se siete in zona(e non siete astemi XD) ve la consiglio davvero!
Avete la possibilità di scegliere fra il tour base e quello "enhanced",dove sostanzialmente sono inclusi degli assaggi.Dal momento che il mio Sire è praticamente astemio,abbiamo scelto quello base,fiduciosa del fatto che avevo visto un bar,all'interno,e contavo di poter provare lì qualche Jack particolare ma,ahimè,mi sbagliavo:lì offrivano solo dei rinfreschi analcolici,in quanto Lynchburg è all'interno di una "dry county",ovvero una contea dove è permesso produrre alcolici,ma non servirli al pubblico.E qui c'è tutta una serie di giri attorno alle leggi,per cui ad esempio loro ti possono vendere il tour "speciale", dove ti REGALANO il whiskey da assaggiare,e possono venderti le "bottiglie souvenir",dove dentro IN OMAGGIO c'è il whiskey,ma guarda caso la bottiglia souvenir costa come quella piena di whiskey che trovi nei negozi ;)
I found the visit very interesting and beautiful, long (about an hour and a quarter), very well explained, if you're in the area (and you're not teetotalers XD) I strongly recommend it !
You can choose between the basic tour and the "enhanced", which basically includes some tastings.Since my Sire is practically a teetotaler, we chose the basic tour, confident that I had seen a bar, inside, and I was hoping to be able to try there some particular Jacks but, alas, I was wrong: they were offering only non-alcoholic refreshments, as Lynchburg is in a "dry county", a county where it is allowed to produce alcohol, but not to serve it to public.And here there is a whole series of laps around the laws, so for example they can sell you the "special" tour , where you get FREE whiskey to taste, and can sell you the "souvenir bottles",with inside FREE whiskey, but it happens that the bottle souvenir has the same price of those full of whiskey that you find in the shops elsewhere ;)

Dopo la visita alla distilleria abbiamo fatto un giretto per la ridente cittadina,costituita da una dozzina di negozi,una chiesa e un municipio.

Potete comprare qui queste scaglie di botti di Jack Daniels usate,se volete dare un aroma speciale alla vostra grigliata.
Le botti di JD vengono anche vendute,vuote ma intere, all'azienda che produce la famosissima salsa Tabasco, per farci fermentare dentro i peperoncini col sale(primo passaggio della produzione).
Il fatto che il legno sìa impregnato di JD contribuisce allo stupendo aroma della salsa che,al pari dello stesso,è prodotta in un unico posto al mondo,ovvero un isoletta della Louisiana,Avery island.
Anche del Tabasco esistono un sacco di tipi(un esempio),ma questa è un altra storia ;)
You can buy here these flakes of used Jack Daniels barrels, if you want to give a special flavor to your barbecue.
The barrels of JD are also sold, empty but intact, to the company that produces the famous Tabasco sauce, to ferment inside the peppers with salt (first step of the production).
The fact that the wood is impregnated with JD contributes to the wonderful aroma of the sauce, which,is also produced in one single place in the world, which is a small island of Louisiana, Avery Island.
Tabasco exist in a lot of varieties,too (an example), but that's another story;)
Anche il carbone dei filtri viene riciclato:ridotto in pellets,viene venduto in sacchetti e potete comprarlo qui.Si usa sempre per la griglia o per le smokers,che qui in Italia non usiamo,però ;)
Charcoal filters are also recycled: reduced in pellets, is sold in bags and you can buy it here.Used for barbecues or for meat smokers.
Mi dispiace aver dovuto integrare con foto non nostre,certe non erano venute,certe il Sire non aveva pensato di scattarle e certe non avevamo potuto scattarle noi :/
